First, let me say - please don't use MSE for proxying or counterfeiting. MSE is designed for creating custom cards and sets for your favorite card games. Please continue to support those card games by buying actual cards rather than faking them.

This is my index of templates available for download. Not all of these templates were written by me, but I am providing them all for download. You might notice that most of them are in large installers. I realize some users may not like this change. Let me explain by answering what I would expect to be some frequently asked questions.

FAQ - Downloading

Why have you grouped the templates into larger installers?
Answer:
Because it is simply getting harder and harder to manage the vast number of available templates without doing something to group them together. For example, at the time I'm writing this, there are 158 Magic templates! By grouping them for releases, I am dramatically cutting down on the number of installer files that I have to keep up with.

What if I only want one template out of an installer, not the others?
Answer:
The good news is that if you only want certain templates out of an installer, when you run the installer, you can choose not to install some templates, and only take the ones you want.

What if I only want the newest templates for the latest cards?
Answer:
Good news! I also am keeping a large installer that only contains Magic styles that were printed during the course of the last two years. It is titled "Magic - Recently Printed Styles".

But what about increased download sizes?
Answer:
I'm trying to manage download sizes by watching the file size on installers and breaking them up as necessary, so that none of them get too large. This, coupled with the constant increase in internet connection speeds leads me to believe that download sizes around the 15 MB range will not be so large as to block the vast majority of users from downloading. The largest installer is only 25.5 MB, and most are under 20 MB.

What about required files, like game file updates?
Answer:
I'm now building all required files, such as game files and mana fonts, into each installer. So the installer will contain every package that every template within it needs to function. This increases download sizes a bit, but makes it so that you, the user, won't have to track down additional file updates to get things to work.

Everything's an installer; there are no zip files. So what about fonts?
Answer:
Fonts are now in a separate communal zip. Within the zip, there are folders detailing which fonts are required for which templates. I wish I could include them in the installers, but that simply is not a possibility.

Why don't you have hi-res styles?
Answer:
Because I do not believe that regular custom card makers need hi-res styles. Regular resolution styles are suitable for custom card design. I believe that supplying hi-res styles serves only to encourage proxying and counterfeiting on such sites as eBay, and I do not wish to contribute to these problems.

FAQ - Missing Templates

Are you going to release the newest template that was just shown on the official Magic the Gathering website?
Answer:
Eventually, yes. Unfortunately, images don't come as quickly as they used to, and my release times are much slower because I often don't have the skills to blank images by myself.

I can edit images - should I help?
Answer:
If you're able to provide blanks for a Magic template that is not already featured, I'm always interested.

What templates don't you have?
Answer:
I currently do not have templates for:
  • M15 Miracles
  • Black on Black M15 Sparkers
  • Numerous Hero's Path frames from Theros Block
    • Born of the Gods Creatures
    • Born of the Gods Spells
    • Journey into Nyx Heroes
    • Journey into Nyx Creatures
    • Journey into Nyx Spells
    • Journey into Nyx Weapons

I'm looking for a template that I KNOW was released on pifro, but isn't here.
Answer:
Let me know what you're looking for, and I might have it. However, if it was a template that was released after my resignation as an administrator for that forum, I very well may not have it myself.

Why won't you release Star Wars TCG templates?
Answer:
Because I don't have the fonts to go with them - I need "Armada" and "Dax-Regular".

Why won't you release Star Wars CCG templates?
Answer:
Because my version is definitely non-functional.

Why won't you release Pokemon templates?
Answer:
Because I know for a fact that a better version than mine was released on pifro prior to its crash.

FAQ - Installer's Not Working?

The installer file won't run.
Answer:
Maybe you got a corrupted file? I would try downloading it again. Even with good stable hosting, it is not impossible to get a corrupted file every now and then.

The installer file says it can't create a file.
Answer:
This is due to a permissions problem with Windows 7 and later. To correct the issue, you need to either give yourself the proper administrative permissions to "write" to files in Program Files, or you need to move your Magic Set Editor installation outside of your Program Files directory. I strongly recommend moving it outside of Program Files directory. This is not anything I can help - this is a change introduced in Windows 7 by Microsoft that cannot be worked around by myself, nor any other developer for Magic Set Editor. I'm sorry.

I still can't get an installer file to work.
Answer:
It is possible to change an installer file to a zip file by changing the file extension from ".mse-installer" to ".zip", opening the zip, and installing the contents into your Magic Set Editor data directory. I only recommend this in two situations, however. First, if you are using subversion for templates in your data directory, you do not want to run an installer file, particularly if it contains any template package that you already have under subversion. Second, if you cannot get the installer file to run properly.

Warning: Extracting an installer as a zip and installing the files manually can cause templates to be "downgraded" because version numbers are not checked in this method as they are when an installer is run. This can lead to features no longer functioning, errors, freezing, and crashing. It should only be used as a last resort.

The file downloaded as a zip. What do I do now?
Answer:
In truth, mse-installer files are really zip files specially made so that MSE can open them. If you change the file extension from .zip to .mse-installer, it should work fine. You may also wish to simply copy the contents of the zip into your data folder, as detailed in "I still can't get an installer file to work."

Trouble Finding Stuff

The page is too long, I can't find what I'm looking for.
[spoiler=Answer]If you know the name or some descriptors of the template, such as "split", "flip", "old", or "futureshifted", you can try searching the page - most browsers allow you to do this by hitting CTRL + F. If you don't know any descriptors for your style, you can try looking at pictures. I've included renders from templates in spoilers whenever possible, and it is a goal for me that eventually every template will have a showcase render.

Trouble with a Template

How do I install fonts?
Answer:
You should google instructions for installing fonts on your particular OS.

I can't properly print split cards or DFCs.
Answer:
There is a roundabout solution to this problem. I've detailed the entire problem and my solution here.

The typeline in my template is gone?
Answer:
You need to move your MSE installation outside of Program Files, and then re-run the installer for that template.

I hope this helps to explain some of what I'm doing. Below, you'll find a list of available installers, and below each, a list of styles contained therein, and also with sample renders in spoilers when they are available.

Enjoy!

First off, this is a great program and kudos to everyone who had a hand it creating it.

Unfortunately, I only have the core MSE 2 program, without any of the additional templates, and that leaves me without certain features which I really need to continue work on the set I'm designing. What I really need right now is Phyrexian mana symbols and 4 ability planeswalkers, but there are several other additional templates with which I'd like to fool around in the future. I just can't install them, though. I've tried refreshing this page and downloading the archives again, in case I got a corrupted installer, but that hasn't helped. I keep getting a Windows prompt, asking me which program I want to use to run the file. I've fooled around a bit, trying different programs, though I think it should just run (The installer for the core program ran without any issues.). I haven't tried changing the file extension to .zip and manually transferring the file to my data folder, because I'm worried about downgrading.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Until I can get Phyrexian mana symbols and 4 ability walkers, I'm pretty much stuck.

My advice is to have a look at the FAQ. There is an entry about last resorts if you can't get the installers to work. If you go through with it, just be sure not to pick and choose which packages from an installer you install - do all of them, as you can't be sure about dependencies if you aren't using installers the proper way.

Thank you, but I had already read the FAQ. As I said in my previous post, I hadn't attempted to change the file type on the installer to .zip, because I was worried about the program freezing up, as per your warning from the FAQ. However, since then, I've tried a couple of times to alter the file type to .zip, but each time, after I've changed it, it won't open. I get an error message saying that it's either an unknown file type or it's damaged. I've tried this several times now.

I've also tried adding the .mse-installer file extension to the installer file in the archive. But when I try to run it, it says that it's an invalid archive.

So, you've tried changing the file type to a zip, and attempted to open it? How did you try to open it? With MSE, or with the native tool for handling zip archives that's built into Windows? You should not be using MSE to open it after changing it to a zip.

If you've been trying to use the zip tool built into Windows and getting that message, there is something wrong with your download. If that is the case, would you mind re-attaching it here or emailing me so I may have a look at the offending file?

Do these problems happen with more than one installer?
